SUMMARY:Dear Lara: Community Education Event on Sexual Assault in Higher Education and Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:Presented in partnership with FilmScene\, Sexual Assault Survivors at Iowa (SASI)\, The Bijou Film Board\, and Honors Students for Unity and Progress: \nJoin us for a screening of Dear Lara\, a deeply personal documentary that exposes decades of sexual abuse and institutional complicity in the classical music world. \n9/10/26 – 6:30pm @ FilmScene (Chauncey location) \nPurchase tickets ahead of time here.  \nCatered reception preceding the screening starting at 6pm \nThere will be a post-screening panel discussion led by Julia Conrad with representatives from DVIP/RVAP as well as Amber Joy Powell and Katharine Baker. \nAmber Joy Powell received her PhD in Sociology at the University of Minnesota in 2022. Amber’s research examines the intersections of gendered racialized violence\, law\, and the carceral state. Her most recent work explores how juvenile detention centers enable and respond to the sexual victimization of incarcerated youth. She is conducting ongoing research on prison rape reform and the fight for sexual safety among legal practitioners and anti-prison rape activists. \nKatharine Baker is the Aliber Family Chair in Law at the University of Iowa College of Law. Her scholarship focuses on the intersection of women’s intimate lives and the law. Baker has written extensively on sexual violence and misconduct\, especially among young adults on college campuses. Her work has been published in leading law journals such as the Harvard Law Review\, Yale Law Journal\, and the University of Chicago Law Review. She co-authored Family Law: The Essentials and numerous book chapters. \n\nAbout the documentary:  \nThe story begins in 2019\, when renowned violinist Lara St. John speaks out about the sexual assault she endured as a 14-year-old student at the elite Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. After her story is published in The Philadelphia Inquirer\, she is flooded with letters and outreach from fellow survivors. Determined to make these voices heard\, Lara travels across North America and Europe to meet others who\, like her\, were failed by the very organizations meant to protect them. As these personal accounts accumulate\, a pattern emerges of institutions shielding predators at the expense of the vulnerable. Blending unflinching testimony\, investigative rigor\, and a haunting original score\, the film exposes ingrained practices of harm and cover-ups\, rooted in power\, silence\, and the worship of reputation over justice. \nJoined by fellow musicians\, journalists\, students and activists pressing for accountability\, Lara’s pursuit to illuminate this insidious pattern in the classical music world serves as both a reckoning from within and a rallying cry for cultural change\, created by someone who lived an all-too-common ordeal and refused to look away. \n“St. John […] does not follow the creed that a journalist’s job is to look but not touch […]. Reserve your seat today here.  \nALL DONATIONS WILL GO TO DVIP/RVAP\, TO SUPPORT SURVIVORS IN OUR EIGHT-COUNTY SERVICE REGION.  \nFeaturing:  \n\nDescribed as being “unafraid to be anything at all” and making “shadowy music that prickles on your skin”\, Gabi Vanek is a bassoonist who exists in a world of drone\, doom and noise. With her sonic interests often the aesthetic and tonal crossover of the latter with contemporary classical music\, she has had the privilege of performing as both a soloist and ensemble member at small and large festivals\, conferences\, and series such as the Darmstädter Internationale Ferienkurse\, International Double Reed Society\, Oh My Ears\, Feed Me Weird Things\, and exhibited at the Osaka University of the Arts Electro-Acoustic Music Festival.\nFormed in 2024\, Seamark Quartet consists of violinists Renee Santos and Sejin Byun\, violist Oliver Bostian\, and cellist Katie Forbush. They are coached by Prof. Elizabeth Oakes as an ensemble of the University of Iowa’s Chamber Music Residency Program. Seamark has worked with many quartets through the CMRP\, including members of the Ariel\, Attacca\, Isidore\, Telegraph\, and JACK quartets. The quartet has also worked with composers such as Jessie Montgomery\, Caroline Shaw\, and Gabriel Kahane. In the summer of 2025\, Seamark participated in the Summer Chamber Music Tour with Artshare\, offering performances in communities across Eastern Iowa. In the summer of 2026\, Seamark traveled to Prague as part of a collaboration between the Chamber Music Residency Program and the Lobkowicz Collection to study and perform at the Antonín Dvořák Birthhouse Museum.\nFounded in 1997\, Red Cedar Chamber Music (RCCM) is dedicated to bringing unique and intimate chamber music experiences to audiences who have limited access to great music. Red Cedar’s mantra\, “Chamber music should be just like this – intimate\, bonding and conversational\,” quotes a review in the American Record Guide. Cellist Carey Bostian\, Artistic Director of Red Cedar Chamber Music\, Carey was a member of Orchestra Iowa for 22 years\, serving as Principal Cellist from 1998-2015\, and has been the conductor of the Iowa City Community String Orchestra since 1998\, serving on the conducting faculty of the Preucil School of Music. Violinist Miera Kim is an Iowa native and Executive Director of Red Cedar Chamber Music. Miera has previously held titled chairs with Orchestra Iowa and the Quad City Symphony Orchestra\, has been concertmaster of the Iowa City Community String Orchestra since 2000 and the Sinfonia Nolte Nutcracker Orchestra since 2007.\nCellist Jamie Clark of Boulder\, Colorado has been praised for her sensitive\, imaginative\, and colorful sense of artistry. She has concertized throughout North America\, South America\, Europe\, and Asia as a recitalist and a chamber musician. She has performed solo and chamber music recitals in venues such as Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall\, Boston’s Jordan Hall\, Eastman’s Kodak Hall\, New York City’s American Academy of Arts and Letters\, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Recently\, Jamie received the Presser Foundation’s Graduate Music Award at the New England Conservatory\, was a candidate in the 2015 Naumburg International Cello Competition\, and was the Recipient of the George and Elsie Hodder String Scholarship for Doctor of Musical Arts Studies at the New England Conservatory.

SUMMARY:Survivor's Stories: Generative Writing Workshop with Samantha Tuttle
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second writing class of DVIP/RVAP’s new initiative: Survivors’ Stories\, a series of five writing classes between August 2026-July 2027. All are free and open to the public\, and survivors are encouraged to attend. \nAll classes will be trauma-informed\, and focused on themes of reclaiming one’s story\, releasing shame\, healing\, resilience\, and building community. Each workshop will last approximately 1.5 hours and conclude with an optional sharing opportunity for participants who wish to read their work aloud.\n\nA trained DVIP/RVAP advocate will be present at each session to provide support if needed.\n\nNOVEMBER 2026 CLASS DETAILS:\n\n\nDate/time: Saturday\, November 7\, 10:30am-12pm\nLocation: The Ranshaw House – 515 Community Dr\, North Liberty\, IA 52317\nInstructor: Samantha Tuttle is currently pursuing an MFA in poetry from the University of Arkansas.
