DESCRIPTION:Join DVIP & RVAP in wearing denim jeans on April 29th\, to show support for people affected by sexual assault. The Denim Day campaign began in 1999 after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court to overturn a rape conviction because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped the person who raped her remove them\, thereby implying consent. Following the reversal\, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. We encourage you to share your photos of your Denim Day fit on social media using the hashtag #DVIPRVAPDenim\, and tag us @dvipiowa. By doing so\, you help spread the message that we stand together in the fight against sexual assault and that there is hope\, help\, and healing available.

Growing up in a traditional Minnesotan Swartzentruber Amish community\, Lizzie was taught to “forgive and forget.” But nearly 30 years after experiencing her own traumatic rape\, she takes the bold step to report her case to the police — challenging Amish communities everywhere to confront and address hidden abuse.\n\nAs Lizzie travels across the country\, she becomes a beacon of hope for Amish and Mennonite survivors navigating generational trauma\, deep-rooted shame\, family ties and suicide. Her mission doesn’t stop at breaking the silence; she also helps others navigate the difficult path of rebuilding their lives after being excommunicated from Amish culture. SUMMARY:Making Magic Together: Dresser Build Event with DVIP/RVAP and Houses into Homes
DESCRIPTION:Two local organizations are coming together to create something magical!\n\nHelp DVIP/RVAP furnish and decorate our six new transitional townhome units in Johnson County. We’re partnering with the amazing Houses into Homes to make things as seamless as possible for donors\, neighbors\, clients\, and each other!\n\nConstruction of the units is nearly complete\, and as we prepare to welcome families into their new houses it’s now time to make them homes. We’ll furnish each one intentionally\, and to reduce both cost and waste\, most of the furniture in the homes will be gently-used and refurbished.\n\nAmong the long list of needs\, each 3 Bedroom Townhome requires 3 dressers and 3 nightstands. If possible\, we would love to provide these bedroom items new and lovingly built by neighbors this late summer evening.\n\nThere is no cost to join us on August 11\, however registration is required so we can plan accordingly. We hope to build some of the furniture outdoors but if the weather doesn’t allow for that there might be a registration limit\, so sign up now!\n\nTo cover the cost of the new furniture\, we hope to raise $150/dresser and $50/nightstand\, for a total of $3\,600. You can make a free will donation when you register or that evening\, and teams can fundraise and give even if they aren’t available that evening.\n\nIf you are a business or organization interested in sponsoring the event\, or providing food/drink for a fun evening\, please write to directors@housesintohomes.org.
