SUMMARY:Keep Quiet and Forgive: Documentary Screening at FilmScene
DESCRIPTION:May 19th\, 7pm\, FilmScene at the Chauncey (404 E College St\, Iowa City)\n\nFind out more and reserve tickets here. \n\nJoin DVIP/RVAP and FilmScene for a documentary screening of “Keep Quiet and Forgive”!\n\nDVIP/RVAP and JC SART (Johnson County Sexual Assault Response Team) will both have representatives at the screening\, along with resources and information on how to receive help\, volunteer\, and donate.\n\nAfter the screening there will be a discussion with Lizzie Hershberger led by Rachel Yoder\, followed by an opportunity to buy a signed copy of Lizzie’s book Behind Blue Curtains: A True Crime Memoir of an Amish Woman’s Survival\, Escape\, and Pursuit of Justice.\n\nBased on groundbreaking reporting\, Keep Quiet and Forgive follows the courageous journey of Lizzie Hershberger\, a former Amish woman who breaks her silence about sexual abuse in her community and ignites a nationwide movement of Amish survivors. Growing up in a traditional Minnesotan Swartzentruber Amish community\, Lizzie was taught to “forgive and forget.” But nearly 30 years after experiencing her own traumatic rape\, she takes the bold step to report her case to the police — challenging Amish communities everywhere to confront and address hidden abuse.\n\nAs Lizzie travels across the country\, she becomes a beacon of hope for Amish and Mennonite survivors navigating generational trauma\, deep-rooted shame\, family ties and suicide. Her mission doesn’t stop at breaking the silence; she also helps others navigate the difficult path of rebuilding their lives after being excommunicated from Amish culture. Filmed over five years in Minnesota\, Pennsylvania\, Ohio\, Florida\, Missouri\, Indiana\, and Wisconsin\, Keep Quiet and Forgive offers an eye-opening look into one of the world’s most insular communities.\n\nLizzie Hershberger is an author\, speaker\, and survivor advocate who shares her story to help others feel less alone. She is the author of Behind Blue Curtains and is featured in the PBS/Independent Lens documentary “Keep Quiet and Forgive.” Through public speaking\, writing\, and community conversations\, Lizzie brings awareness to difficult but important issues while offering hope\, honesty\, and encouragement to others on their healing journey.\n\nRachel Yoder is an assistant professor of screenwriting at the University of Iowa. She is the author of the novel Nightbitch.

SUMMARY:Making Magic Together: Dresser Build Event with DVIP/RVAP and Houses into Homes
DESCRIPTION:Two local organizations are coming together to create something magical!\n\n\nHelp DVIP/RVAP furnish and decorate our six new stable housing units in Johnson County. We’re partnering with the amazing Houses into Homes to make things as seamless as possible for donors\, neighbors\, clients\, and each other!\n\n\nConstruction of the units is nearly complete\, and as we prepare to welcome families into their new houses it’s now time to make them homes. We’ll furnish each one intentionally\, and to reduce both cost and waste\, most of the furniture in the homes will be gently-used and refurbished.\n\n\nAmong the long list of needs\, each 3 Bedroom Townhome requires 3 dressers and 3 nightstands. If possible\, we would love to provide these bedroom items new and lovingly built by neighbors this late summer evening.\n\n\nOur friends at Ball\, Kirk & Holm have pulled a magical opportunity out of their hats: the cost of all of the dressers and nightstands! When they learned of this new townhome furnishing project and the build event in support of The Row\, BK&H stepped up with a challenge: get 60 sign-ups to help build all 18 dressers and 18 nightstands at once on August 11\, and they will sponsor the ENTIRE cost of furniture.\n\n\nIf we succeed\, any additional financial support and sponsorship for the event will go entirely to helping the victim-survivors\, thanks to this amazing generosity. So\, now it’s up to you. Don’t let this chance to fund $3\,600 of furniture vanish back into thin air!\n\n\nWhen you sign up\, say a little thanks to BKH. This is a free event; however\, registration is required.\n\n\nIf you are a business or organization interested in sponsoring the event\, or providing food/drink for a fun evening\, please write to directors@housesintohomes.org. All funds raised will be used exclusively to support the townhome project.\n\n\nSchedule:\n5:45-6:00pm: Registration and Gathering\n6:10pm: Welcome & Instructions\n6:15-7:45: Build ready-to-assemble dressers and nightstands in teams of 2-4\nOR: “Shop” in Houses into Homes warehouse from prepared lists (kitchen items\, linens\, decor\, toys\, games\, cleaning supplies\, etc) and pack in moving boxes\nOR: Test puzzles and games\, write housewarming cards\, and more\n7:45-8:00: Collect & Clean up\n\n\nLearn more and register/donate here. \n\n\nWant to volunteer at this event? If you’re a first-time Houses into Homes volunteer\, register here. Next\, to volunteer on August 11\, sign-up here.
