In Her Shoes is an interactive simulation that allows all community members to step into what victim/survivors of domestic violence experience every day. Participants will have the opportunity to understand, in a very compressed period of time, the ups and downs a woman may encounter over the course of many years through 17 different stations. Some of the stations’ participants will go to include the hospital, emergency shelter, and church. Each participant will be able to choose the best path for themselves and/or character. The scenarios used within In Her Shoes are based on true stories and real-life experiences of the one in three women affected by domestic violence.
Domestic Violence is a community tragedy and not just a private problem. We all have a role to play in ending domestic violence regardless of our jobs, income level, or gender. The goal of Domestic Violence Awareness Month is to bring victim/survivors into our awareness and gain a greater understanding of how we as a community can come together to provide resources, a voice, a sense of understanding, and support.
This event is open to the public and free, though we do encourage pre-registration as space is limited.
In Her Shoes is provided with the support of the Johnson County Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the Domestic Violence Intervention Program in celebration of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. For more information about the sponsors please visit dvipiowa.org and jccadv.org
