24th Annual Souper Bowl Success

The DVIP Annual Souper Bowl is a community event that raises funds for victims of intimate partner violence, human trafficking, stalking, and harassment for eight Southeastern Iowa counties. 

For our 24th year of this event, we had 10 sponsors including our Presenting Sponsor, CBI Bank and Trust, who helped support our efforts in providing to-go soup orders and a special commemorative mug to each ticket holder. We are excited to say that 300 community members purchased tickets to support victims/survivors!

With the generosity of 10 area restaurants and the help of over 40 volunteers, including DVIP board members, we provided over 700 containers of soup by offering pick up of 175 orders and 70 deliveries. We want to send a special thank you to Trumpet Blossom, Bread Garden, BASTA, and Red’s Ale House for providing an additional 2 gallons of soup to meet the demands of each order. 

With community members and sponsor contributions this event raised $20,826 and $4000 of in-kind contributions! We are blown away by the generosity of individuals like you who support our services year after year.

The “Souper Bowl” was created by our current Executive Director, Kristie Fortmann-Doser, to challenge the myth that more violence occurs against women around the NFL Super bowl. Violence against women, men, and children happens every day.  1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will be affected by intimate partner abuse in their lifetime. 

Funds raised from the Souper Bowl go directly to serving victims/survivors. This year has been especially difficult due to COVID-19. Since May, DVIP has seen a 28% increase in calls to our hotline and the need is not slowing down. Many are calling for emergency sheltering since they cannot seek refuge with friends and family as they could before COVID-19. With our shelter being at capacity, our advocates have been working tirelessly to find apartments and hotels to house the additional families who need our help. DVIP has spent 76% more in sheltering costs in the last 9 months than we did in 2019 during the same period of time.
