“Forty Years Forward” DVIP is celebrating 40 years of serving victim/survivors!
September 20, 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
$50
The Domestic Violence Intervention Program (DVIP) is celebrating 40 years of serving victim/survivors. In 1980, our small first-year budget provided victims and their children emergency housing, counseling, and a 24-hour hotline. Over the 40-year history, there have been many additions to services, such as youth programming, pet sheltering, legal support, community engagement projects, and much more. DVIP’s service region also grew over the years to include 8 counties in Southeastern Iowa. Last year, we supported over 1700 people, including 265 youth.
One of the goals of DVIP is to empower adults and youth victims of domestic violence to end the cycle of generational violence by supplying information about warning signs and behaviors of dangerous partners. A long time DVIP advocate recently shared the story of a child named “Stella” who overcame the cycle of abuse because of the care and positive attention that she and her mother were given while living at our shelter. She said this of her experience, “DVIP believed that my mom was a good mom and that we were good kids and that we did not deserve to live in fear.” Stella’s mom got herself and her daughter away from her abusive husband by contacting DVIP, Stella said this was the first step for her family in reaching immediate and long-term safety and ending the cycle of abuse.
To support Stella and other victims of stalking, human trafficking and abuse we are launching our Endowment Campaign by celebrating “40 years forward” at the Coralville Marriot on Friday, September 20th, 2019. We will have live entertainment, hor d’ oeuvres, a guest speaker, and a silent auction that highlights our 40-year history. Please join us for this exciting night to celebrate your support and the work done to support victims!
