DVIP Hosts Shop for Shelter and Shop for Safety
The Domestic Violence Intervention Program (DVIP) is hosting Shop for Shelter and Shop for Safety during the month of October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Shop for Shelter: October 23rd, 2021 9:30 AM-1:00 PM
In Johnson County, DVIP will host the 15th annual Shop for Shelter event on October 23rd, 2021 from 9:30 AM-1:30 PM. We are partnering with several grocery stores in the Iowa City area on this event. Participating stores include all Hy-Vee locations in Coralville and Iowa City, and Fareway located at 2765 Commerce Drive in Iowa City.
DVIP volunteers, board members, and staff will be onsite at each location to solicit donations for the organization’s most needed items. The goods collected at this event will provide hygiene items, household cleaning supplies, and food for over 1,100 individuals the agency serves within Johnson County each year.
Shop for Safety: Burlington and Keokuk
For Shop for Safety, we are partnering with grocery stores in Burlington and Keokuk on a goods drive during the month of October. Participating stores include the Hy-Vee located at 3111 Main St in Keokuk, the Hy-Vee located at 939 Angular Street in Burlington, and Fareway located at 920 Lawrence Drive in Burlington.
At the Hy-Vee locations, shoppers can purchase pre-filled bags containing items from DVIP’s top needs list throughout the month of October. Fareway will have an open goods drive, with lists available for customers to use as a shopping guide.
How You Can Help
Our organization has seen a dramatic increase in calls for service due to the pandemic. Our program alone has experienced a 28% increase in hotline calls each month since May of 2020. These calls have directly resulted in a doubling of the services our advocates have provided over the past year and show how urgent the need for resources is within the communities we serve.
We are seeking 80 volunteers to assist in the Shop for Shelter event. Individuals interested in volunteering can sign up here.
